ROOTED IN HISTORY

LIVING IN COMMUNITY

Learned Town Old.jpg

THIS IS OUR STORY

The history of Learned begins a few years before its official charter in 1884, when the railroad was being built through the area around 1880. Much of the land where the town now stands was owned by Henderson Lowry, who first purchased property there in 1846. In 1880, Lowry had the land surveyed into lots and blocks by a surveyor named Mr. Daniels, effectively laying out the town. The community was named after Rufus F. Learned, a Natchez lumber company owner whose business was cutting timber throughout the region. His company had originally been founded by his stepfather, Andrew Brown, whose daughter Elizabeth later married Learned. An early attempt to charter the town under the name Brownsville was denied because another town already used the name, but a second application under the name Learned was accepted in 1884. Evidence that the community already existed before incorporation comes from the establishment of a post office named Learned in 1882.
